In the heart of the Porter Valley lies a now wildish & rough, long- grassed, pony-populated few acres of ground now often referred to by locals as Waggie’s Field in memory of the one-time groundsman Leslie Arthur Waghorn. ( see caricature below ) These few acres are almost sacred to many former pupils of that truly excellent school KING EDWARD V II GRAMMAR SCHOOL ( KES ) as it was the sportsfield on which they were energetically active Summer & Winter for two afternoons each week, rain or shine.
Fondly remembered by this FoPV webmaster, ‘Waggie’ lived locally and died in 1979.
Few boys, for it was an all boys school prior to the 1960s,
knew the Porter Valley better than the KES lads.
